I had heard that coated German Shepherds were going to be accepted by Germany and they thought they would have their own show classes and breed books on them starting January of 2010. This date is not to far off. I found it interesting as my little Annie just might be a plush coat, time will tell for sure. I also knew that there were two types of coated GSD’s, a true longhair has no undercoat, and then there was another coat considered coated because of the hair around the ears and a little longer coat but had an undercoat, those most termed plush coats.
I decided to go out and see if I could find anything on some GSD forums and I did find posts about this being true and I have not seen anyone saying yet that it is not true. It will be interesting to see just if and how they add this new class of German Shepherds to theUSA schutzhund conformation, and it will also be interesting to see if AKC follows suit with Germany if this ends up happening in AKC conformation shows. This was the post that basically laid out the program to their understanding, so far there was nothing in the forum saying it was not true. Time will tell and I will watch to see just what happens and let everyone know. Listed below is the post:

I am sure that someone will correct me, if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that in 2010,
the SV will “recognize” the longcoats (those with an undercoat, only). But, they are NOT to
be bred with the stockcoats and separate breed books, shows and surveys will be maintained
for them. Otherwise the standard and breeding requirements will be the same.
Interesting, huh? ”

Interesting. If this does happen in Germany, I can’t imagine the AKC following suit. People have been trying for years to get the AKC to recognize white GSDs as a separate breed and that sure hasn’t happened.

Amy,
The reason it has not on the white might be because Germany does NOT accept them. This is different if SV is the one that accepts plush coats with different breed books and shows I would think. SV does not recognize white GSD’s though.

My baby girl was a coated (long) but with an undercoat (she had hair between the toes, in the ears, behind the ears, on the chest, and pantaloons the size of a British soldier).
She was warm as a bear in the snow she was. One time we came home (mind you she had a dog door, heated house, dog everything) and there she stood happily at the end of the day with icicles hanging off her tummy.
I am glad the SV is going to accept them as they truly have been in existence from the beginning.
