There are many compelling reasons to train your pet. It is my belief that the single most compelling reason to train your pet is to enhance its life. The simple fact is trained pets live happier, healthier and ultimately freer lives than their unlucky, untrained peers. Training not only saves lives, but greatly improves the quality of that life. Trained pets can go more places, do more things, and generally share the companionship of their owners on a much more consistent basis. Other reasons are to increase the quality time shared by you and your pet, exercise, and pride of accomplishment. A trained pet is a constant source of pride while and untrained pet can often be a constant source of stress.
Training a pet is a positive cycle. The more you train your pet the better the animal behaves. Since the animal behaves so well it becomes more and more a part of the family, going places, doing mini dog shows to show off it’s newly learned tricks for friends and admirers. The more the dog travels, shows off it’s new behaviors the better the dog behaves and the more it’s invited to go.
An untrained pet live is just the opposite. Because the animal is poorly behaved no one wants to be around the dog, the dog is rarely if ever taken on outtings with the family, you never want to practice with the dog because of the shear frustation of dealing with an unresponsive animal. The more the dog is isolated, the less the dog is handled and worked with the worse the dogs behavior becomes and until the cycle spins out of control and the dog is no longer wanted.
So, I say training has big benefits for both you and the dog. But, on a scale of whos life will benefit the most I would have to give the nod to the dog. Their very life is on the line regarding whether you will step up and educate your dog or leave their education in their hands.
Training is fun and the benefits are enormous.
